L'empowerment structurel des hôpitaux « magnétiques » est-il concevable en France ?

The recent reforms of the health care system have resulted in paradoxical requirements: to do better with less. The situation has created a general dissatisfaction of the working conditions on the part of caregivers, pushing a large number to want to abandon their profession. The management and organisational culture play a big part in the drive to retain staff. The concept of the attractive hospital, with its principles of decentralisation of power and its participative management, offers partial solutions to this problem. Indeed, literature on the subject recommends that health institutes improve their support of managers in their capacity to guide the teams through a pro-empowerment culture. However, are the principles of the Magnet model and the specific theme of “structural empowerment” adapted to the hospital culture in France? This article raises the question of the application of this basic principle of magnet hospitals within the French hospital culture. The aim is to encourage discussion around the subject and to put forward the suggestion that the nursing profession appropriates the theme of Quality of Work Life (QWL), following the example of the Magnet accreditation in the United States.
