Competence, Nursing Practice, and Safe Patient Care

This article examines the topic of competency in nursing. It reviews the literature and examines the organization, systems, and career-long training designed to define and evaluate competencies. It looks at how competencies affect registered nurses and the organizations that employ them. The need for competencies based on patient safety outcomes and the dynamic, changing reality of nursing practice is highlighted.
