This paper describes a framework of grinding process modeling to understand the grinding fundamentals and design grinding processes with predictive performance. The model regards grinding process as a time dependent process and an integration of microscopic interactions in the wheel-workpiece contact zone, including cutting, plowing, and sliding as well as other frictional interactions. The grinding process control and design are in fact to manage and balance all these interactions. The principles of microscopic interactions are analyzed and used to correlate the grinding process input parameters and performance output.
