Modelling phytoclimatic versatility as a large scale indicator of adaptive capacity to climate change in forest ecosystems

► We present CLIMPAIR, a new phytoclimatic, correlative and niche-based model. ► Applying this model we evaluate the phytoclimatic versatility of forest ecosystems. ► Versatility can be used as an indicator of adaptive capacity to climate change. ► Future decreases in forest versatility are predicted for Peninsular Spain. ► Decreases are greater in Mediterranean and low altitude areas.
