Increase in aboveground fresh litter quantity over-stimulates soil respiration in a temperate deciduous forest

▶ Litter addition induced a long term real priming effect increasing soil CO2 efflux. ▶ Litter contribution to total soil CO2 efflux was not affected by fresh litter amount. ▶ Real priming effect probably resulted from the activation of the whole soil system.
