► We assessed limiting factors for butterflies during grassland restoration. ► For arable reversion restoration success increased to a plateau over time. ► Restoration success did not change over time under grassland enhancement. ► Restoration is promoted by rapid host-plants establishment. ► Dispersal and the national distribution of host plants limit colonisation.
