Fate of a climate-driven colonisation: Demography of newly established populations of the limpet Patella rustica Linnaeus, 1758, in northern Portugal

► The warm-water limpet Patella rustica colonized N Portugal in the late 1990s. ► Effects of the severe 2008/2009 winter were analysed on populations of this species. ► Three decades of SST were also analysed, contextualizing the distributional changes. ► Despite the cold winter, the abundance of P. rustica increased in the study area. ► Our analysis suggested that adults are not sensitive to extreme winter temperatures.
