Recognition of individual knobby sea stars Protoreaster nodosus (L., 1758) using aboral surface characteristics

► We developed a non-invasive method to recognise individuals of Protoreaster nodosus. ► Photo-identification was based on colouration, arm condition and number of tubercles. ► A large number of individuals could be recognised. ► Characters used proved to be reliable, durable and robust.
