► We tested the effect of incubation duration on the response of larvae to temperature and pCO2. ► The effects of temperature and pCO2 on larvae can be evaluated in short experiments (< 5 d). ► The effects of temperature and pCO2 on larval survivorship emerge only after 4-5 d incubations. ► Long pelagic larval duration may be associated with susceptibility to high temperature and pCO2.
