Interpretation of genotype × environment interactions of sugarcane: Identifying significant environmental factors

► Environmental factors driving G × E interactions of sugarcane under rainfed conditions in South Africa were investigated using AMMI analysis. ► Age at harvest, temperature and water stress differences caused separation of sugarcane mega-environments. ► An appropriate water stress index was identified to characterize future multi-environment trials. ► New regional subdivisions are suggested for future selection programmes. ► Environmental factors influencing site selection within different mega-environments were identified.
