Accuracy of species identification by fisheries observers in a north Australian shark fishery

► We estimated observer error for identification of shark species in a north Australian shark fishery. ► The species under consideration had the greatest influence on identification error. ► Male sharks were less likely to be mis-identified than females. ► Some errors in species identification were independent of observer experience.
