Activation and interruption of the reproduction of Varroa destructor is triggered by host signals (Apis mellifera)

► We present a new bioassay for examining the triggering of Varroa reproduction. ► Host factors can activate the reproduction of the honey bee mite Varroa destructor. ► Host factors can also interrupt an already started oogenesis of female mites. ► Fatty acid esters of the host cuticle might be involved in triggering mite reproduction.
