The influence of boundary conditions on the contact problem in a 3D Navier–Stokes flow

We consider the free fall of a sphere above a wall in a viscous incompressible fluid. We investigate the influence of boundary conditions on the finite-time occurrence of contact between the sphere and the wall. We prove that slip boundary conditions enable to circumvent the “no-collision” paradox associated with no-slip boundary conditions. We also examine the case of mixed boundary conditions.

RésuméOn considère la chute d'une sphère au-dessus d'un plan dans un fluide visqueux incompressible. On étudie l'influence des conditions aux bords sur l'apparition de contact entre la sphère et le plan en temps fini. On montre que l'introduction de glissement permet de résoudre le paradoxe de « non-collision » associé au conditions aux bords et on étudie également le cas de conditions aux bords mixtes.
