Fig. 1 shows the evolution of the melt front interface in the filling process at different times. The symmetry of the melt flow in this cavity is accurately predicted and we find that the level set method with the domain extension technique presented in this paper can successfully deal with the complicated geometry in 3D filling process. Fig. 2 shows the temperature distributions on x-z plane (y = 15 cm mid-plane) at t = 0.2 s and t = 2.2 s, respectively. The values of melt temperature near the mold walls and the free surface are lower than other regions. When the hot melt contacts with the cold walls, the melt temperature decreases due to the heat conduction of the cold walls. In addition, the temperature field near the free surface decreases due to the convective heat transfer process between the melt and the gas.
