Ultimate strength of transversal T-branch plate-to-CHS connections under compression

This paper proposes an analytical model for the calculation of the ultimate strength of transversal T-type branch plate-to-circular hollow section connections subjected to compression. Currently, transversal branch plates are commonly used as structural components in various engineering fields to connect brace members to circular hollow section structural members due to their versatility and aesthetics. Formulae for the ultimate strength of these types of connections have been traditionally obtained using empirical formulations, i.e. by regression analysis. Nevertheless, at ultimate limit state, the failure mechanism of T-branch plate-to circular hollow section connections is characterized mainly by the formation of yield lines in the chord member. Hence, a mechanical model is developed herein using the upper bound theorem of plastic collapse to predict the compressive strength of the connections. The model takes into account membrane effects, geometrical parameters and material properties. The obtained results show close correlation with experimental and numerical results found in the literature.
