Using Twitter as source of traffic data - Concepts and experiences of the project AUSWEG

Today a lot of information is shared using communication platforms like Twitter (https://twitter.com/). This also includes information useful for traffic management. To use this information for automatic processing it has to be saved in a structured way. Therefore the messages have to be analysed and transferred into a database structure. In this process the special characteristics of communication platforms as data sources containing different user content need to be taken into consideration. This results in a concept which is based primarily on machine learning and largely independent of the grammar used in the messages shared by the communication platforms.
