Chemical laboratory consolidation project

During the 2015-2016 academic year, a chemical engineering research group at the University of Delaware (UD) conducted a consolidation of their wet chemical synthesis and electrochemical laboratories located in two different buildings on campus. Established goals were to reduce footprint, minimize costs, and improve management of laboratory resources. A team comprised of representatives from multiple departments at UD was formed to ensure an efficient and safe consolidation of the lab spaces. This article summarizes the plan that was put in place including space-planning, timing, and protocols for the safe relocation of chemicals and equipment. Suggestions for how to follow this process while minimizing laboratory downtime are presented.
