It was found that proper amounts of Cr promoted the formation of carbides, especially M7C3 carbides, which were effective in enhancing the matrix strength of materials and increasing hardness to improve the erosive wear performance at elevated temperature. Cr dissolved in the matrix also controlled the formation of oxides, resulting in improved thermal resistance of the material. All of the newly designed materials showed good thermal resistance and excellent erosive wear performance at 873Â K. At 1173Â K, the erosive wear performance of a material with 9 mass % Cr was improved approximately 65.1% in comparison with material without Cr added due to the higher matrix strength and decreased oxidation, which afforded a material with good thermal and erosive wear resistance.
