Food scare crises and price volatility: The case of the BSE in Spain

► In this study we examine the impact of the BSE on Spanish beef prices. ► We focus on price volatility responses of prices in the beef marketing chain. ► We find that BSE alters price behavior and increases volatility. ► During the BSE, price volatilities at different market levels are negatively related.
