► We study the economic feasibility of a free-ranging MHS for the apparel industry. ► A component-based and modified activity-based costing methodology is proposed. ► Adopting flexible MHSs has a promising IIR larger than 30%. ► Sensitivity analysis shows the robustness of the advantage in terms of IIR.
