Organizational Capability Approach opens new perspectives for developing and sharing organizational competencies around the strategy of globalized companies. This paper explores this approach and aims at implementing it practically. Thus it provides a conceptual model named C-makers, which is then used in the design of IT solutions to manage organizational capabilities (mechanisms for transfer, assessment, renewal). These propositions are finally experimented on the case of an automotive supplier, Valeo Group.
► Organizational Capability Approach is explored to develop organizational competencies and support strategy of globalized organizations.
► A conceptual model named C-makers is provided to understand Organizational capability concept, its relationships, and to orient the design of an IT management system.
► Generic IT structure is defined to support mechanisms for transferring, assessing and renewing organizational capabilities.
► Specific tools are developed to instrument practically this generic IT system and applied on the case of Valeo group, a globalized automotive supplier.
► This IT management system improves the alignment of organizational competencies, it increases the detection of local practices and its fast reuse by the whole organization, and it supports participative innovation around the shared organizational competencies.
