Using the INACSL Simulation™ Design Standard for Novice Learners

BackgroundThe International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) has released Standards of Best Practice™ for simulation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of the INACSL Simulation Design Standard (SDS) to create a novice simulation experience for sophomore nursing students.MethodThis pilot study was conducted with sophomore nursing students over several semesters (n = 143) in a foundational nursing course to prepare students for fundamental respiratory concepts. Expert certified healthcare simulation educators facilitated and debriefed each simulation-based experiences (SBE). The Creighton Clinical Evaluation Instrument (C-CEI©) was used to provide feedback to students. Students also completed a post Simulation Perspective Survey after each experience.ResultsEighty percent of the students believed that the simulations were a valuable learning experience and helped to stimulate critical thinking. The SDS was an effective method providing clear guidelines for designing SBE for novice nursing students.ConclusionsThe SDS provides a clear format for designing SBE for novice nursing students. This article provides a concrete example on the implementation of the SDS framework in SBE, promoting the integration of best practice in simulation.
