Implementation of a laboratory-based drain and trash disposal program

Pouring waste down the drain or putting it in the normal trash by laboratory personnel is highly regulated. The Weill Cornell Medical College (“Weill Cornell”) Environmental Health and Safety office performed an in-depth review of its drain and trash program; comparing it to federal, state and local regulations and prudent practices. A drain and trash disposal program was developed to promote safety, protection of the environment, and regulatory compliance. Three possible drain and trash disposal strategies were identified. It was determined that the best fit for Weill Cornell was EHS staff centrally making hazardous waste determinations and communicating the requirements to laboratory staff. A written program with educational materials was implemented. As a result of this process, a prudent and compliant drain and trash disposal program was developed to meet the regulatory requirements and acceptable risks for our campus.
