► We performed a meta-analysis on TNFA gene polymorphisms and TB susceptibility. ► 23 case-control studies were identified, including 3630 cases and 4055 controls. ► − 857C>T polymorphisms in TNFA is associated with increasing TB risk in Asians. ► No association was found for − 308G>A, − 863C>A polymorphisms and TB susceptibility.
