► Hydrophilic and organophilic chemically modified graphene oxide can be got through a two-step diimide-activated amidation process. ► Separately added EDAC and NHS can ensure the sufficient reaction of the interactants. ► EDAC molecules may insert into GO to increase the distance between adjacent layers.
