Using a surviving lineage of Madagascar's vanished megafauna for ecological restoration

► Madagascan giant tortoises are likely to have influenced ecosystem functions. ► Madagascar and Aldabran giant tortoises are closely related. ► We propose using Aldabran giant tortoises to restore missing ecological functions. ► It would be cost-effective tool to halting the ongoing extinction processes in western and southern Madagascar.
