The role of demographic compensation theory in incidental take assessments for endangered species

► Many endangered species laws allow exceptions to prohibitions via incidental take provisions. ► We argue that the exceptions apply the theory of demographic compensation to endangered populations. ► We model an endangered species and demonstrate how compensation can alleviate the effects of take. ► We conclude that the capacity to compensate should be considered in incidental take assessments.
