Bioconvection in an anisotropic scattering suspension of phototactic algae

► The phototaxis model includes the effects of anisotropic scattering by algae. ► Effects of forward scattering on the onset of bioconvection are investigated. ► The marginal state at the onset of bioconvection is either stationary or overstable. ► Overstable solutions are less favourable at higher forward scattering.
