► A physical model for impedance of the cathode catalyst layer in DMFC is developed. ► The CCL is split into separated MOR‐ and ORR‐dominating domains. ► The MOR-dominating domain shows up as a separate high‐frequency semicircle. ► The semicircle radius increases with methanol concentration.
