Linking of discrete element modelling with finite element analysis for analysing structures in contact with particulate solid

► This paper proposes a methodology to link DEM with FEA to evaluate the effect of the particle forces on a contacting structure. ► The DEM boundary contact forces are transformed into the nodal forces and moments in triangular finite elements using the concept of shape function. ► The methodology provides a direct and effective means to determine the stresses in the contacting structure resulting from the particulate solid.
