► Abrasion was initially the main mode of attrition for 710-850 μm particles. ► Fragmentation became important as well as abrasion for 200-400 μm particles. ► Fragmentation was the main mode for < 180 μm particles in an air jet apparatus. ► The fines production rate was independent of particle size and proportional to time.
