► We examine the integration properties of total renewable energy production, production of biofuels and biomass in the US. ► First study that considers the unit root properties of renewable energy production. ► We found each production series contains a unit root. ► Random shocks to renewable energy production may lead to permanent departures from predetermined target levels.
