► The welding process of high strength steel plate-to-plate welded joints is studied. ► The welding process is modeled by a sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis. ► The residual stress distribution is studied by using numerical modeling. ► Accuracy of the numerical model is validated by comparing with test results. ► A parametric study is carried out to investigate the effect of key welding parameters.
