► A method for the calculation of inter-element stresses is proposed. ► The presented procedure is the extension of a 2D method recently published. ► The method is always applicable for linear elements. ► It however shows some peculiarities for the corner nodes of some quadratic elements. ► The accuracy of the stresses depends on the accuracy of the FE analysis.
