Eye movement and brake reactions to real world brake-capacity forward collision warnings-A naturalistic driving study

► In situ visual and brake reactions due to collision warnings presented to drivers in the real world are presented. ► The concepts of a threat-period (TP) and a post-threat-recovery period (PTRP) are discovered. ► Drivers show different glance behavior in TP and PTRP depending on the predictability of the event and driver distraction. ► Drivers brake in order to prevent a forward collision. ► Visual collision warnings should not be presented down in the instrument cluster as this causes misallocation of attention.
