► We examined the impact of negative stereotypes on the driving performance of older adults. ► Participants completed a simulated driving task under a Stereotype Threat paradigm. ► Older drivers in the stereotype condition made more driving mistakes than their counterpart in the control group. ► Social factors need to be considered when assessing the performance of older drivers.
