Effects of freezing and thawing on the microstructure of latex paints

► We used cryoSEM to study the microstructure of paint suspensions at different time points in a freeze-thaw (FT) cycle. ► In a FT cycle, particle aggregation occurs during the thawing process. ► Slow thawing conditions enhance particle aggregation. ► We postulate a mechanism based on the kinetics of aggregation during the individual steps in the FT cycle.
