► Particles velocities are determined in blast waves using a high speed framing camera and particle image velocimetry. ► Particle phenomena such as agglomeration and a particle velocity gradient in the particle field are determined. ► Numerical velocity values closely match experimental values. ► Estimates of drag coefficients can be calculated from data at two established imaging points.
