AbstractThe E-Maintenance paradigm has potential to impact technical, environmental, personnel, and market issues in the industrial and services maintenance sectors. To this concern, advances in MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), in wireless technology and in custom microprocessors are giving the opportunity to produce so called “smart sensors” that will be capable to get automatically maintenance information from the shop floor equipment. Using this technology, self diagnosing and self healing systems could be developed. This will allow the design of totally new maintenance management systems, through integration with prognostics and CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System) software. The analysis of the new maintenance business models that will emerge from this technology breakthrough is an interesting research topic that this paper intends to address.
