For the Internal Combustion Engine, pressure to lower emissions while maintaining or improving fuel consuming required, that the injection system and the air path loop be better controlled and matched at every engine operating conditions. In this paper we developed a fault tolerant control strategy for an internal combustion engine air path. This strategy is carried out under the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) framework. The proposed fault tolerant control strategy uses the concept of integral sliding mode to reduce the so called chattering phenomenon of the classical sliding mode control. It incorporates an adaptive mechanism that adjust the controller gains in order to deal with modeling uncertainties and actuator failure without information about the exact bounds. The simulations on a recently validated experimental air path model show good results for actuator failures conditions even in the presence of uncertainties on model parameters.
