USING FLOATING CAR DATA ON THE BASIS OF GSMS

The paper focuses on the applications of a Floating Car Data system which is now operational in the province of Noord-Brabant: Mobile Traffic Services which is supplied by LogicaCMG. By tracking mobile phones that travel in cars information is gathered about travel times and speeds of car traffic on roads. This kind of information is essential for the deployment of dynamic traffic management. It fits within the key concept of Dutch traffic and transportation policy: reliable travelling time from door to door. After a pilot in which the descriptive quality of the data was studied, the emphasis now lies on the application of the data. The province of Noord-Brabant has compiled an action programme for several applications on a strategic, tactical an operational level.
