Cutting AISI 1045 steel at very high speeds

► We developed an experimental device to provide high speed machining. ► The cause of saw-tooth chip formation for AISI 1045 steel is investigated. ► Mass transfer of heat due to chip flow retards the saw-tooth chip formation. ► Increasing cutting speed weakens thermal diffusion and enhances mass transfer.
