The traditional model of the slider-crank mechanism that always neglects the flexibility of the crank shaft and considers only one revolute clearance joint shown in Fig. 1, will cause lower accuracy of analysis. In this work, a rigid-flexible coupling model of the slider-crank mechanism is established under the software ADAMS shown in Fig. 2, which regards the crank shaft and linkage as flexible bodies, and also considers the effect of the clearance of the joints. The dynamic response of the mechanism with clearance is explored under both the cases of the mechanism with the rigid and the flexible crank shaft and linkage. The simulation results show that the dynamic response of the mechanism is influenced by the clearance greatly and the motion of the crank shaft center is characterized by three phases: a free flight motion, a contact motion and an impact motion. In the case of the flexible crank shaft and linkage, the maximum values of impacts and acceleration are highly reduced.
