Robust stabilizing control oriented on identified patient-specific T1DM model

The identification of an input-output model of a patient with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) in intensive therapy regimen, i.e. continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is presented. The dose of insulin subcutaneously delivered is used as input data and interstitial glucose measurements are used as output data. With the identified model a controller is designed using the tools of robust control, where the objective is that the level of glucose in diabetic patient tracks the level of glucose in a healthy subject while the hypoglycemic scenarios are reduced. Disturbance rejection intake and variations in plant's parameters are included in the design. The reception error in the measurements is represented as a weighting function in the feedback control system. In order to include meal's effect in the numerical simulations, the controller is tested on a nonlinear compartmental model. The diabetic's glucose level closely reaches the reference level while the tracking error is up 15 mg/dL.
