Increased unit sizes, utilization of non-homogeneous fuels, and requirements of smooth and efficient operation during load transients has increased the importance of a dynamic system analysis both in process and control design of industrial power plants. The dynamic analysis is needed to define the load balancing buffer capacity and control performance required to fulfil the requirements set for the power plant operation. Utilization of the dynamic analysis requires a dynamic simulation environment consisting of a model library for industrial power plant components. The simulation model describing the essential dynamics of the analysed plant should be set up and parameterized quickly using available design and measured data from the process. The paper describes the design concept and the simulator system developed and used by a Finnish consulting company Pöyry. The concept has been utilized successfully in tens of projects all over the world.
