Effects of sintering velocity on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-pressed ZrB2-SiC-ZrO2f ceramics

► Zirconia fiber was firstly used as reinforcing phase in ZrB2-SiC ceramics. ► Suitable sintering velocities could reduce the stress concentration during sintering process. ► The flexural strength and fracture toughness were enhanced to 1117 ± 98 MPa and 7.1 ± 0.5 MPa m1/2. ► Toughening mechanisms are due to fiber debonding, pull-out and transformation toughening.
