SMART COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN HUMANS AND MACHINES BASED ON MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING

For improving safety and comfort of a human-machine system, the machine needs to 'know' the human operator in the system in a real time manner. If the machine is able to sense the human's state and intent, then the machine's assist to the human can be fine tuned. In relation to the issue, this paper discusses trust, automation surprises, responsibility and authority, with a driver assist system for advanced automobile and an exoskeleton robot suit, called HAL-5, as examples.
