SUPPORTING SITUATIONAL RISK AWARENESS IN SHIP NAVIGATION

Operators' situational risk awareness (SRA) is crucial for adequate decision making and action in human-machine systems. Data overload can contribute to a loss of SRA, but it is possible to provide technological support by a risk-assessment system. When evaluating a SRA-support system during the development process, specific questions have to be addressed to achieve user-centered design. This paper presents an evaluation study of the Navigational Risk Detection and Assessment System (NARIDAS) that was conducted in a ship-handling simulator. Results show slightly positive effects of NARIDAS on SRA and navigation performance.
