RUN-TIME RECONFIGURABLE REAL-TIME OPERATING SYSTEM FOR HYBRID EXECUTION PLATFORMS

To handle the complexity of embedded systems based on hybrid architectures a well designed operating system (OS) is necessary. Such systems, comprising general purpose processors (CPU) and reconfigurable devices (FPGA), are very attractive as they can provide flexibility as well as high computational performance to support dynamic requirements. Furthermore, resources and time constraints are intrinsic in these systems. Taking all these characteristics into account an OS must support real-time and reconfiguration during run-time. In this paper, an approach for run-time reconfigurable OS based on online estimation of application demands running under a hybrid architecture is presented. Especially run-time assignment and reconfiguration of OS services over such architecture are discussed. An improved heuristic algorithm for run-time assignment problem is presented. Besides this, the evaluation of the reconfiguration costs are presented and discussed.
