The integration of the different elements comprising a mechatronic system at an early stage of the design procedure becomes a significant issue in a number of applications. To this end, it can become very useful to analyze the actuator performance as a function of the size, design parameters and physical limitations. The present work deals with the formulation of model-based design rules to be used in the conception of optimized mechatronic and adaptronic systems employing linear hydraulic actuators. It expands the results obtained in Gomis-Bellmunt et al. (Gomis-Bellmunt O, Galceran-Arellano S, Sudrià-Andreu A, Montesinos-Miracle D, Campanile LF. Linear electromagnetic actuator modeling for optimization of mechatronic and adaptronic systems. Mechatronics 2007;17(2–3):153–63) where the methodology is presented and applied to linear electromagnetic actuators.
